Anne Barela

Anne Barela is currently a consulting engineer for Adafruit Industries, LLC, which manufactures electronics for numerous companies and hobbyists, located in Manhattan, New York. She retired in 2018 as a senior Foreign Service Officer and Supervisory Security Engineering Officer for the U.S. Department of State, holding various technical and supervisory positions during her 30 year career. She was posted to US Missions in India, Bulgaria, Finland, Greece, and Germany. 

Anne is a graduate of Whitman College (BA in Mathematics/Physics) and the California Institute of Technology (BS Electrical Engineering). She received post graduate training at the US National Foreign Affairs Training Center, Arlington, Virginia (The Foreign Service Institute).

Anne previously worked at Hewlett-Packard, the Caltech/NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory, and Boeing. 

Anne is the author of the books Make: Getting Started with Adafruit Circuit Playground Express, Make: Getting Started with Adafruit Trinket as well as tutorials on the Adafruit Learning System https://learn.adafruit.com/u/AnneBarela. She’s authored approximately 5,000 social media posts for Adafruit.

In her free time, Anne likes to work on microcontroller projects and retrocomputers. An avid electronics enthusiast, she started with a workbench and Radio Shack parts in high school. Currently, Anne enjoys the space program and has watched numerous launches from Kennedy Space Center and the Cape Canaveral Space Force Station, near her home on the Florida Space Coast.

Anne is currently married to Amy Lendian, a Fire Systems Suppression Engineer working on the Artemis Program at the NASA Kennedy Space Center, Florida.
